I'm wondering what your opinions are on buying old school 80s/90s gear like samplers, romplers, synths, drum machines etc.? Where I live, Canada, the price of an Akai s1000 is around $1000 which seems nuts, but I still want one haha. I've been getting into ol'school Jungle production, and initially I was scouring the internet for plugins that could give me that classic early 90s sound. I bought VSTs like amigo, tal dac & tal sampler, rx950, the Korg suite etc. but now I've been considering shelling out some more serious cash on real gear. What do you guys think, is hardware worth the money over VST emulations?

Well I suppose if your into the retro gear and authentisaty and you have the funds then why not? But if the said Vat plugins give you same out come and sound then save your money and just get the vst plugins sounds of that age.

Basically if you have the cash to spare and want the authentisaty buy the gear.. down to person preference at the end of the day.
Can save your cash and spend here buying VIP 🤣🤣🤣

Yeah the thing is I've found some of the pulg-ins come fairly close to replicating the original, but there still is a fairly noticeable difference. The questions is the that difference worth hundreds or even a thousands of dollars... I'm still on the fence. Also there is a huge a ease to working to VSTs vs old hardware, so time drain is a factor when you're producing too, I guess. On the flip side, I have heard people say that the restrictions of old gear often create interesting outcomes in the creative process. All stuff to think about.

Definitely interested in getting a V.I.P. membership, but just joined yesterday, so I'm going to settle in first    :D

Hi
Yeah I agree... The end of the day it's down to personal preference.

Side note.
There are other ways in to gain access to VIP area by contributing lots of stuff to the site. Member who upload stuff continuously to the site and help us out get looked after and get VIP perks. I don't make money to profit from it I just want to make enough so the site pays for itself and it has done for the past 6 months.

I just want to bring back the old style forums that we had back in the 2010's era... They were good communities back in the day and helped a lot of members out. That's why I decided to bring it back... [cheers]

I'm a huge retro equipment fan myself but TBH I've never seen much of a point in retro synths, as they're probably easier to emulate. But hardware effects on the other hand are something I'd kill to get my hands on, and seem like a more difficult thing to get right in software.

Maybe not so retro, but I'd absolutely love a Bricasti M7, as I get to play around with them at work (on a good day). But I hear the Seventh Heaven plugin is pretty good.

On the other hand, vintage equipment might need more maintenance in the long run. And you cant forget the cost of a decent audio interface to record at least 1 stereo signal.

Totally agree.. again it's personal preference and if you have the disposable income to purchase said equipment? A lot can be emulated but I guess it's having the equipment and being a hobbiiest in a certain degree?

I got old synths but with all the added noise by patching it all and recording, it's just a lot cleaner and easier to sort on a vst in the DAW. And like most things if it sounds the same it's about the music not what your using. Itms the end result that matters.
